An investigation by the Associated Press has found that an American who went missing in southern Iran seven years ago was a CIA agent.
Robert Levinson vanished during a visit to Kish island in March 2007. The US government said he was on a business trip when he disappeared. But the findings of the AP investigation show the CIA sent Levinson to Iran on a spying mission and later paid his family 2.5 million dollars to head off a revealing lawsuit. Tehran has repeatedly said it has no information about the whereabouts of Levinson but is ready to help locate him on humanitarian grounds.
